"We Carried On"
October 2008 marked the month of sadness for what we were about to find out about our baby. After an
October 13th ultrasound with a specialist everything was confirmed that our baby was not going to survive.
Our baby girl was diagnosed with symptoms that all lead to the birth defect known as Potter's Syndrome. She had non-functioning kidneys which lead to being surrounded with no amniotic fluid. This condition is life-ending is due to the fact that the lungs cannot develop without any amniotic fluid.
We then were faced with two life-changing decisions. Do we let nature take over and leave it up to God, or do we induce early, ending the pregnancy and ending our baby’s life. After days of deciding, we decided to “carry on.“ I wasn't ready to say my good-byes and as long as my baby was not suffering I was going to give her a chance at life. So we carried on...
The next 3 1/2 months were probably the hardest days that I will ever have to face in a life time, but looking back they were some of the best days of my life. Trying to cherish and enjoy pregnancy becomes more difficult when you know the outcome isn’t going to be a perfect healthy baby coming home. I tried making as many memories as possible, trying not to forget any moment.
As I got further along, I began talking with my doctor about an induction date somewhere around 36 weeks. But, to all surprises, Shaunna decided to make her world debut on her own.
On January 30, just 2 days after our maternity pictures were taken Shaunna came into this world, alive! Shaunna spent 2 hours and 41 minutes with us before she grew he wings and was off to Heaven. She spent her life being held on my chest and receiving unconditional love from her father and close family. Shaunna blessed us with opening one of her little blue eyes for a short period of time, and with her cute little cries. They were the most precious thing I have ever heard.
Shaunna's life may have been brief, but the life of her will forever live on in my heart. Those precious hours with her will never be forgotten, and the memories will last a life time.
